prkl - variable ep

tn_rtn007.jpg

as you may or may not know, "prkl" is a shorthand for "perkele". and as you may or may not know, "perkele" is a finnish cussword - according to fins, the most powerful curse known in any language. obviously, most fins don't speak dutch. then again, the dutch take on cursing in the worst possible way is to verbally chuck diseases around, whereas "perkele" may mean "god damn", "devil" or anything in between. it's just a different approach. but enough of that.

to people closer to home, the creator of this release is known as petri laine, a (not surprisingly) finnish student currently located in the uk for study-related purposes. these purposes are partially repressed by the urge to create music and spin the wheels. prkl's debut release (called "first ep" in finnish) appeared on kamikaze records late last year, and now it's subco's turn to spread the noise.

the music in question fits the name behind it quite well. not that it attempts to tear up speakers or eardrums. not that it intends to instill hatred or agression. not that there is anything religious or anti-religious going on (at least, i wasn't told). but we are talking about techno in it's purest form: not necessarily hard, but crude, monotonic and relentless. and if adam beyer and marco carola and a whole bunch of other guys can get away with it on vinyl, than certainly can someone who has the chutzpah to call himself "gddmn" on the interweb.

lil' tidbits o' news

let's see.

first off, subco is currently in the business of actively reviving itself. this means that we are open for new releases and new artists. if you've got something, just email it to me. if you're working on something, feel free to give an advance warning.

secondly, if you're on last.fm, i've started a group dedicated to this label. so feel free to join in and tell all your friends. while on the subject, all new releases have been provided (as full-length previews) to said website, as well as a bunch of old ones.

lastly, in a final attempt at stopping the spambots dead in their tracks, i've messed around with the posting code a bit, so if you're not logged in, you'll notice. if this doesn't work, that will spell the end of the open posting policy. luckily we still have an open joining policy. eh?

monopole - hoping we could meet

tn_rtn006.jpg

yes, we're back. back i tell you. and after a 1.5 year-long hiatus, sublogic returns to bring you one of its most experimental releases so far. no manner of comparison can truly be made, but this one manages to supersede 2GI's release in all it's oddness.

so are the works of richard sudney a.k.a. monopole. his procedure for musical creation involves such diverse elements as recording sounds in the field on the slightly frayed edges of civilization, manipulation of micro-samples, and abusing ancient equipment not originally intended for use in a music studio. monopole hails from the world techno capital, but has been influenced by more than just the music associated with his geographical position on the globe. all in all, this results in music that is barely describable as anything but indescribable, and simply has to be heard.

the first two tracks are the "floaty" ones: noises and voices in the distance, mixed with eerie strings, accompanied by a minimal electronic rhythm that can hardly keep itself together. it takes some time to get used to (unless of coarse, you listen to this kind of music all the time), but then picks you up and takes you along, borne on its apparent emptiness.

the latter couple are the reasons this release appears on routine instead of flow, as they introduce beats your head can follow. at least "here, once again" features something that resembles a more usual 4/4 pattern, or at least beats that are of equal length. "across the wire" drops this approach, but continues that flow (bad choice of words there, i know) in its own way, and eventually finds itself going silent.

the word "dub" probably ought to be used in this shred of text. so dub. there. dubbity dub. listen without distraction.

oh, and do leave a message, and let the world know what you got from it. also, do check back to see this place brought back to life; more new music is on its way here, hoping to be received with many, many open arms.

tn_flw003.jpg

with this here flw003, not only does subco bring you yet another mixed ep, it's also the longest title of a release ever (so long, in fact, that the database had to be tweaked to accomodate it).

"easily embarrassed" is the name given to this new project, and it's the joint effort of nick van der schilden and peter spaargaren (known for their plantbane project), in conjunction with nick's brother, jeffrey van der schilden, a.k.a. nekativ of dream wave project and trance-o-mania fame. with jeffrey, being the artist largely responsible for inspiring nick into making music, who in turn was largely responsible for inspiring peter into making music, now making his debut on subco together with -you know- nick and peter, things have come full circle in a way. a way spanning several years and a rather large full circle, that is. if you're not getting this, don't worry. it's just sprinkles of bonus info, wrapped into a nigh-incomprehensible sentence. sue me.

anyway, enough with the chatter. the crux of the easily embarrassed project is the forging of laidback, chilled-out ambient music with a strong psychedelic vibe and influences from anything you could think of. and this is what's taking place, here, on this sweet 4-track mixed ep. if you haven't started downloading yet, now's a good time to get to it, by the way.

outgate - mute city ep

tn_rtn005.jpg

it would seem jani rantanen is on a productive roll. under his outgate pseudonym, he treated us to the machinae ep back in january, and now he returns with more -though altogether different- intricate tech sounds.

routine number five is called the mute city ep, and it's a mixed release in a fashion much like yasahi's when earth fell on the moon ep (flw002). having described the whole as "a deep, ambient like dip into tech land", jani starts off at "central" with clicks, pads and noises, and takes us along from there, for a ride that touches down at all points of the compass. like being lost in the helsinki subway system, a 117 bpm laidback urban tech journey ensues.

presuming you have a pulse, you should be checking it out. go ride the tube for a while.

something white

hi.
improved once again, you can now say hello to the new sublogic website - the result of several months of webbuidling effort. the old one was satiated for too long already, so this was about time. and i'm satisfied. of coarse, otherwise you wouldn't be looking at it right now.

some things you might be interested to know about it:
it's become something of a netlabel/weblog hybrid. this news post is an entry just as much as a release is, and you can post comments on either and anything else that qualifies as such. as a result, i decided to drop the "feedback" section.
the forum is now... a forum. i mean, one forum. it's just a bunch of threads, not divided into multiple sections. the forums were never used that intensely since the last site update, and what with all the blog-like functionality, i don't think it'll ever become too chaotic.
there is a new rss feed that will expell new releases -er, entries- and have playlist data enclosed when music is present. users of winamp/shoutcast live (and probably others that support rss with enclosures) will be able to stream the files directly into their favourite media player. isn't that neat? the old "talk" rss feed is currently defunct, but may see a replacement some day soon.
oh. you should start using the firefox browser just about now. this site uses some of the neat tricks that CSS2 offers, and IE6 doesn't support those (actually, IE6 has enough trouble properly rendering CSS1 as it is). so if you're using IE and think this site looks messy or is hard to read or whatever, then that's not because i'm a bad web designer (i'm not, you see, and this site is 100% standard compliant), but because the people at microsoft can't code. i didn't test this site with the IE7 beta, because, well, it's a beta, and it incorporates so many ideas copied directly from firefox (tabbed browsing, anyone?) that i simply refuse to take it into account until windows installs it on my machine without asking (which will probably happen when it's through the beta phase). the sad story is that people unaware of firefox (of which there are still way too many) are actually going to believe this was microsoft's idea, and they will get down on their bare knees and thank them for giving them this great feature. to make a long story short: firefox rocks and IE, pretty much by definition, does not. so use firefox.

anyhow, i should stop ranting. go forth enjoy the newness. new releases are coming your way, albeit very, very slowly.

oh, and you may start posting your thoughts on the new site below.

2GI - su càrmelo bene

tn_rtn004.jpg

at last some new sounds have arrived. routine release number 4 is this EP from italian duo 2GI, who have elected this spot to release their newest works instead of either of their previous release venues for reasons of this music not "fitting their roster". apparently, these tracks were deemed "too normal" for acedia and inv3rno.

no, but in all honesty. what you will be exposed to upon downloading this release, is impossible to define with one word, or one sentence, or one paragraph. to save myself a lot of trouble, i could go with the first single word that comes to mind: chaos.

all four tracks are heavily electro-influenced and indeed quite chaotic. the first two are full of acid noise next to that, while the latter two are -surprisingly enough- full of guitar noise. providing anything more descriptive would be a waste of time and effort. i might add that this may remind you of jerzz' music, in being part music and part anti-music, and kicking all that is regular in the nuts. i might add a warning, stating that even though subco has something of an undergound legacy to honour, this is "seriously off-beat", to say the least. i might add that there is a decent chance you may not even enjoy this release, but that you'd have to hear it first in order to find out.

i am fairly confident that in putting forth these tracks, subco has once more managed to provide an interesting listen to all of you, whilst pushing the boundaries another notch further into uncharted sonic territories. i dare you to expose yourself to su càrmelo bene.

melenick session 019

as previously indicated, dj l'embrouille played his mix on livesets.com radio, and has now made it freely available on the archive. yes, it features two tracks from outgate's still excellent machinae ep, as well as plenty of techno music from various reputable netlabels (rohformat, avionix, stadtgruen, zimmer...)
since it doesn't have a spot on any particular site other than the archive, what follows is a direct link. you can get this mix here.

enter the archive

all middle age and newer releases are currently present on the servers of the internet archive. for those of you who prefer to download releases as one zip file, you now can, albeit from a slower server. links to these zip files have been added to all releases starting with #104; you'll find them in the "related web" box.

hey again.
yesterday, rtn003 got released. a tenfold huzzah for outgate and his minimal hypnotechno! this is the stuff that we like.
in other news, two more dj mixes have surfaced featuring material from sublogic releases. first off is harald walker's firecracker mix, released on the dutch sonic walker blog/label, which involves two tracks from forcesupreme's stylewar ep: "warpsig" and "cuntmustash".
then, there is another mix by dj l'embrouille, this time released on the avionix netlabel: his netlabel mix week 51 includes another track from cadra's last ep. these mixes are worth their download time. even if you're on dialup.
